Visual Perpetual & Motor Skills
If left untreated, the complexity of the visual system can create challenges for the child to process visual information. Reading and following instructions can be overwhelming, having too many words on the page can become distracting, and poor visual perceptual and visual motor skills could lead to poor hand-eye-coordination.
Handwriting
If left untreated, children oftentimes will lose confidence and self- esteem in their abilities. Children will feel that writing is too challenging for them and give up from a young age on the idea of even trying. Handwriting encompasses many functions of the mind and body that all have to work together simultaneously. If it feels overwhelming to the child, it can cause the child to shut down, have poor self- esteem and cause them to have poor social emotional interaction and development with their peers.
Sensory Integration
If left untreated, children oftentimes will be unable to learn how to regulate their emotions causing maladaptive behaviors, tantrums, and stressed out parents and teachers. Emotional regulation is a foundational skill and requires coping mechanisms to be put in place. The earlier a child begins getting help with sensory integration, the more beneficial it will be. We look to form healthy habits and sensory regulation strategies. The earlier we put these in place, the easier it is to correct. It is also so important for the 2 sides of the brain hemispheres to work together. These synapses form as infants and require attention at a young age.
Fine Motor Skills
If left untreated, children will oftentimes have decreased hand and finger strength, difficulty grasping utensils such as: pencils, crayons, markers, feeding utensils, paintbrush, hairbrush or toothbrush. It also makes doing everyday tasks more difficult, such as: buttons, peeling an orange, opening up containers, etc.
Gross Motor Skills
If left untreated, children often develop with challenges with balance, coordination, safety awareness and fine motor control. Gross motor skills are the foundation to be able to run, jump, and play. Gross motor skills need to develop in order to have fine motor abilities. Without these foundational skills, fine motor control, such as; handwriting, shoe tying, and manipulating containers and small items can be affected as the child grows and develops.
