involve larger muscle body movements such as running, jumping, walking, jumping jacks. Gross motor skills are essential for strength, balance, coordination, and reaction time.
Poor gross motor skills impair fine motor skills, participation in activities in school, the home, and community, decreasing confidence and self-esteem and coordination.
also known as dexterity is the coordination of smaller muscles, involving the synchronization of hands and fingers along with the eyes. Manual dexterity is controlled by the nervous system allowing the brain and muscles to work together. Fine motor activities include writing, coloring, cutting, stringing beads, dressing, eating using a fork/ spoon, toothbrushing, and stacking blocks. Gross motor skills need to be intact to develop fine motor abilities.
Poor fine motor skills impair the ability to hold a pencil/crayon, utensil use for feeding, cutting, handwriting, fasteners, buttons and dressing
sensory processing disorder is defined as, ” a neurological disorder in which the sensory information that the individual perceives results in abnormal responses.” (Ahn, Miller et. al., 2004; Ben-Sasoon, Carter et. al., 2009)
Sensory experiences include movement, touch, smell, taste, body awareness, sight, sound, and the pull of gravity.
Sensory information gets “mixed up” in their brain and therefore the responses are inappropriate in the context in which they find themselves.
Sensory integration therapy aims to help kids with sensory processing disorder by exposing them to sensory stimulation in a structured, repetitive way. The theory behind it is that over time, the brain will adapt and allow kids to process and react to sensations more efficiently and regulate their emotions to adapt to their sensory experiences/environments appropriately.
Handwriting is based on various components. Handwriting can be illegible, poor letter formation, unable to align letters or orient them to fit on the paper.
A child struggling with handwriting can be based on many different factors. Some of the factors involved include: attention, hand strength, grasp, core and postural control, and visual perceptual/ visual motor challenges.
At OT 2 U, we perform an evaluation where we look at the child as a whole to figure out where their handwriting challenges are coming from.
Once we recognize the root cause of their handwriting challenges, we provide fun interventions though play to improve deficits.
Visual perceptual skills allow a child to interpret what is being seen. Visual perceptual skills encompass visual discrimination, figure ground, visual memory, visual closure, and form constancy.
Visual motor skills allow a child to coordinate their eyes and hands to work together to complete tasks such as copying shapes/writing/ throwing and catching a ball.

If left untreated, the complexity of the visual system can create challenges for the child to process visual information. Reading and following instructions can be overwhelming, having too many words on the page can become distracting, and poor visual perceptual and visual motor skills could lead to poor hand-eye-coordination.
If left untreated, children oftentimes will lose confidence and self- esteem in their abilities. Children will feel that writing is too challenging for them and give up from a young age on the idea of even trying. Handwriting encompasses many functions of the mind and body that all have to work together simultaneously. If it feels overwhelming to the child, it can cause the child to shut down, have poor self- esteem and cause them to have poor social emotional interaction and development with their peers.
If left untreated, children oftentimes will be unable to learn how to regulate their emotions causing maladaptive behaviors, tantrums, and stressed out parents and teachers. Emotional regulation is a foundational skill and requires coping mechanisms to be put in place. The earlier a child begins getting help with sensory integration, the more beneficial it will be. We look to form healthy habits and sensory regulation strategies. The earlier we put these in place, the easier it is to correct. It is also so important for the 2 sides of the brain hemispheres to work together. These synapses form as infants and require attention at a young age.
If left untreated, children will oftentimes have decreased hand and finger strength, difficulty grasping utensils such as: pencils, crayons, markers, feeding utensils, paintbrush, hairbrush or toothbrush. It also makes doing everyday tasks more difficult, such as: buttons, peeling an orange, opening up containers, etc.
If left untreated, children often develop with challenges with balance, coordination, safety awareness and fine motor control. Gross motor skills are the foundation to be able to run, jump, and play. Gross motor skills need to develop in order to have fine motor abilities. Without these foundational skills, fine motor control, such as; handwriting, shoe tying, and manipulating containers and small items can be affected as the child grows and develops.
